The Importance of Being Odd – By Torbjörn Andersson

There is something quietly powerful about being different. In a world that often encourages us to follow familiar paths, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows invites us to walk another way. We gather as brothers and sisters, united by friendship, love and truth, with a shared purpose that reaches beyond the lodge room and into the lives we live each day.

To be Odd is to choose a path of reflection, compassion and personal growth. It is to recognise that every human being carries a story, a struggle and a possibility yet to be discovered.
Within our lodge, we are given a place to pause, to listen and to remember what truly matters.

Our rituals and symbols remind us that growth begins within ourselves. The words we hear during our meetings carry meaning, yet their deepest value emerges through our actions. Friendship asks us to build genuine relationships. Love calls us to care for others. Truth challenges us to examine our own choices and live with integrity. These principles are living commitments. They ask us to bring patience into difficult conversations, kindness into moments of uncertainty and courage into situations where doing what is right requires effort.

I have come to appreciate that the strength of a lodge rests in the small things as much as in its ceremonies. A brother or sister who takes time to listen, a welcoming word to someone who feels uncertain, or a sincere question about how another person is doing can make a lasting difference. Such moments may appear ordinary, yet they express the very heart of our Order. The lodge becomes meaningful when every brother and sister has the opportunity to contribute, to grow and to feel that he belongs. We come together with different experiences, perspectives and abilities. Our differences can become a source of strength when we meet one another with respect and a willingness to learn.

We are invited to look beyond appearances, beyond first impressions and beyond the comfort of our own assumptions. We learn to see the person behind the words and the potential behind the imperfections. Our work, therefore, extends far beyond the closing of a lodge meeting. It continues at home, among friends, in our workplaces and wherever another human being crosses our path. The values we profess become real through the way we treat others and the responsibility we accept for our own development. Perhaps this is one of the most important lessons of being Odd.

We always carry the lodge and Orders message with us. Every encounter offers an opportunity to practise what we have learned. Every day gives us another chance to become a little wiser, a little more understanding and a little more faithful to the principles we share.
We may gather as Odd Fellows, but our purpose is deeply human. We strive to become better men, and through that striving, to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
The true measure of our Order is found in the men and women we become and in the good we create.

The importance of being Odd is ultimately found in the orders simple yet demanding calling: to keep working on ourselves, to strengthen the bonds between us and to contribute to a world where friendship, love and truth are expressed through deeds, all for the betterment of man.
