For all that caring and kindness requires of us, the returns are beyond measure. Because one of those many returns is the restoration of hope. In times when aggression, hatred, and deception call out loudly for our attention, and awe, offers of aid restore our hope, and our faith in one another. Mutual aid reminds us of our capacity, with all of our varied talents and resources, to be there for one another in times of personal need.

Long ago one of the reasons our Fraternity was one of the biggest was the issuing of member benefits. Lodges provided benefits for Sickness, Death, and Funeral costs. Most Lodges today have not issued benefits in years. There has been discussions lately about changing that.

When it comes to explaining Odd Fellowship to people not familiar with fraternalism, it’s a challenge. The two most common modes of explaining the Order to others are either 1) comparing it to certain *other* fraternal groups (of the apron-wearing persuasion, usually) or 2) talking vaguely about community service and listing off some of our bigger charitable partners or a couple of local lodge activities.

Our forebearers in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows knew that the acts of love and compassion we performed were at the center of our collective identity and were the secret to our growth and success. Somehow, though, we have become increasingly distant from these noble ends and our Order has paid the price, becoming a mere shadow of its former self in terms of size and vibrancy. It didn’t happen all at once, but rather bit by bit until we have found ourselves in a place where many members don’t even know what our aims and principles are, let alone work to carry them out in their communities.
