Ask Me I May Know -By Ian Love-Jones

Ian Love-Jones is an educator and the current Financial Secretary at Peninsula #128 in Portland Oregon. He is also author of Three Links Hijinks: An Odd Fellow’s Joke Book.

Let’s talk about the Odd Fellow’s slogan “Ask me, I may know.”

“Ask me, I may know” is a warm invitation to others that puts our approachability, and our humble spirit on display.

In just one line, that phrase connects two very important qualities – the willingness to share, and the modesty to admit when we don’t know it all.

This Odd Fellow’s slogan stands out to me, particularly as someone in education, because I understand how hard we work for the knowledge we have, how much we empower others by sharing that knowledge, and how often the teacher themself, has more to learn.

The best teachers that I’ve ever had did not know it all, but whenever they didn’t know something, they were modest enough to admit it, curious enough to find the answer, and caring enough to share it.These teachers built and maintained trust by acknowledging their human imperfection, and still following through to find and share knowledge with others.

Please remember what trust and courage it takes for anyone to ask for knowledge. And whenever you’re fortunate enough to be around those seeking information, always be ready to offer that warm invitation, “Ask me, I may know!”

Three Links Hijinks: An Odd Fellow’s Joke Book

This Odd Fellow themed joke book knows that it’s cheesy and leans into the dad joke humor with a wide grin. Picture a charming treasury of jokes punctuated by delightful illustrations capturing the whimsical spirit of the Order. Being an Odd Fellow isn’t all solemn obligations, secret handshakes, and weighty ceremonies. Just as often, thankfully, Odd Fellowship is about humans from different walks connecting around a shared desire to do good, and to enjoy each other’s company in the process. What better way to connect folks from different walks of life, than through the universal language of humor?
